Smoking is bad is of course. However, for the Concorde traveler flying at twice the speed of sound, and at an altitude of 60,000 feet, a BIC plastic lighter just won't do. Airlines operating Concorde designed unique matchbooks as a souvenirs of the supersonic flying experience.
Pan Am was one of the first three airlines to sign options for Concorde, but like other airlines that took out options, with the exception of British Airways and Air France, it did not purchase the supersonic jet. The matchbooks the airline produced remain as relics of this chapter of supersonic travel history that never was.
