The Los Angeles Chapter of the AIGA - the professional association for design, had a major revamp of the annual portfolio day, a day of professional review of the design work of graduating college students.
Produced by the education board of the chapter, it was an inspiring day seeing the creative work of students, represented from all the schools in our community. With portfolios from UCLA, USC, Cal State, OTIS, Woodbury University and Art Center, one could see differences in the student work from each school, but easier to see were the similarities between the students the in enthusiasm to make an impact on our culture through design. Also inspiring was the way the Los Angeles design community pulled together in transforming and truly elevating the event to something more than a portfolio review, but an inspiring and educational daylong experience for everyone involved, on either side of the table. Chaired and inspired by Haven Lin-Kirk of USC's Roski School of design, it was great to work with her, as well as Scott Hutchinson of UCLA, representatives from all the schools involved, an army of volunteers and the AIGA board, all pushing and elevating each other's concept of an impactful day of design education.
To make the day more than a portfolio review alone we had a lounge with guests from the international branding consultancy HUGE, 2015 National Smithsonian Design award winners Oblong Industries, Wondros, Gamedesk, 2 Bit Circus. In the lounge students could engage, ask, and see up close and personal what these studios were doing. Instead of a job far, panel discussion, or presentation, the lounge fostered a close up connection to learning about the work of these industry leaders. The close up round table with each of these industry leading studios gave students a rare chance to interact directly with people doing groundbreaking work in their field.
Adding to the uniqueness of the day was the event site, the Steelcase Los Angeles showroom on the 32nd floor of the AT&T building in downtown. The Steelcase live/work showroom set a stage for a professional and truly aspirational day. With beautiful future forward business furniture, unblocked views of Los Angeles for miles and miles, industry leaders guests, and a huge spectrum of the creative community present, it provided everyone involved with a day to be inspired about our future for graphic design in Los Angeles.
A very special day at Elevate 2015
