The UCLA Extension catalog cover design program is part of the school's Master of Graphic Design program. I distinctly remember the first UCLA Extension cover in 1990 by Paul Rand. For years, the covers have had a personal impact on me. Observing them had a role in inspiring me to become a graphic designer. Facing the honor of designing for the Fall 2015 catalog, I turned to a visual metaphor of a person seeing through a 'camera obscura,' as a representation of discovery in learning through UCLA Extension. Sunny and bright, The color palette reflects the spirit of our community in Southern California, as well as the spectrum of joy in learning.
We extended the Camera Obsucra concept to our workshop at the 2015 ReDesign Creative Directors conference in New York. A group of creative directors and David Byrne with the cameras that we made on that day.
