The four time Grammy award winning experimental jazz fusionist, bassist, singer, songwriter and LADdesign have ideated closely on developing visual languages that serve to articulate the variously diverse conceptual themes of each album project. For her most recent album and multidisciplinary endeavour, Songwrightsapothecarylab, LADdesign approached designing and art directing the comprehensive ecosystem for all visual components of the project as a radically unique challenge. The experimental Songwrightsapothecarylab evolved out of a series of ongoing workshops with musicians, neuroscientists, psychologists, ethnomusicologists, and other specialists driving at a functional The new visual system served to reframe the resource and the relevancy of UCLA Extension. In the project specific publication LADdesign drew on themes of catharsis, reflecting what it means to expand the frontier of possibility and the courage inherent in discovery and innovation. Central to the message of the initiative is the unique inclusivity of UCLA, Los Angeles, and this moment of reinvention. Since 1990, UCLA Extension has featured the works of several of the world’s best-known creative minds, beginning with Paul Rand, and including Frank Gehry, Saul Bass, Deborah Sussman and Ivan Chermayoff on the covers of their catalogs. In commissioning LADdesign to rethink the publication completely, we were able to go beyond the cover and expand on the spirit of access and understanding as applied to disciplines, programs, events and fields of study across the institution. The full color publication was accompanied by 3-D lenticular postcards that animated the cover art - underscoring the idea of development, emergence, and the joy of discovery. Animated for social and online components as well, the system announced a new redefined chapter for UCLA Extension in a post pandemic era of growth. SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE&nbsp;MUSEUM“Space Sounds: Through the Distance” LAD executive produced with NASM and BYT Media a virtual concert spotlighting the creativity and community that can be found in distance and isolation, in both music and spaceflight. Featuring performances from artists including Sting, Clipping, Bethany Cosentino, Dan Deacon, Ben Gibbard, Valerie June, Lukas Nelson, John Roderick, Vagabon. Hosted by Tested’s Adam Savage it included readings from Edward James Olmos, and conversations with JPL Mars missions systems engineer Bobak Ferdowsi. LAD was honored to bring a number of artists to the program, author the text for the opening segment, create the program poster and artwork, and work closely with the museum in overall development of the program viewed by an audience of over 60,000 worldwide. The photography provides a rare look into the private spaces that foster invention, laboratories for challenge, realms of personal exploration, and a spectrum of musicians that thrive within them. Mirror Sound captures artists in their studios across a gamut of musical styles, gender, age, race, and geography, who work in an equally wide a range of spaces: big, fully stocked studios, laptops in tiny bedrooms, basements, the requisite garages, cultural clubhouses, and splendid rural hideaways. In seeing the environ- ments visually—the artists’ ecosystems—we learn that their worlds and habitats become just as important as the gear they use and their methodologies. Daniel’s photos so artfully capture more than just a mere space but a sense of the soul, vibe, and in some cases, maybe even the smell of being there. This message serves as a comprehensive portrait of life on Earth through our music, art, languages, natural world, and science. The concept of these Golden Records and their contents have captivated the interest of humans since their 1977 departure from Earth. Without depictions of or references to war and violence, the contents of these records serve as a representation of our ideal self — something we can aspire to as much today as the day they were launched, and into our future. In 2017 working in close collaboration with OZMA Records, we developed the packaging to release them here on Earth utilizing memorabilia, photos, and assets from the original records. Designing The Future of Music is an LADdesign authored and led multi platform initiative that challenges graduate design students, designers, makers and the public to reimagine how we connect to music in a digital age. It’s a program that stands at the intersection of futures literacy, cultural and social impact and the universal power of music. Taking the form of academic workshops (at the Design Futures Lab at California College of the Arts, as well as the Global Innovation Design (GID) program at Dyson School of Design Engineering, Royal College of Art, Imperial College London) a museum exhibit (Museum of Design Atlanta) public events and books, the program draws on the contemporary practice of speculative design, demonstrating how initiative outcomes can be used to amplify the social power of music and the music experience, redress imbalances in the industry between makers, providers, and listeners, and the provocation of more meaningful and authentic creative experiences for the public, the artist and designer. Designing the Future of Music focuses on the power of this cultural connection and the transformative action of looking forward - how we might preserve and strengthen the benefits of this intersection. It illuminates the power of connection and experience - of bringing people together and making change happen. Each chapter takes on a specific aspect of self- recording through original photography and interviews with musicians, revealing the joys and complications of recording music on one’s own terms. Authentic and unfiltered, we see how musicians chart their path to self-recording and use emerging technologies to make their music.
